IS YOUR HEALTH AFFECTED BY THE USE OF DEODORANTS AND ANTIPERSPIRANTS?
Toxins are all around us and that includes what we put on our skin. But is everything we put on our skin absorbed into our body?
What are Deodorants and Antiperspirants?
We can sweat for different reasons - physical, emotional, hormonal, which then mixes with the bacteria on your skin causing body odor. Genetics and age also play a role in body odor. People then turn to the use of products to reduce the problem of sweating and body odor.
Do you know the difference between Deodorants and antiperspirants? Deodorants can get rid of the odor but not the perspiration, they are alcohol based and turn your skin acidic, to ward off bacteria. Antiperspirants contain aluminium based compounds to block the sweat pores to reduce the amount of perspiration that reaches your skin. If these products don't work, your doctor can prescribe you a stronger prescription of aluminum chloride, also known as Drysol or Xerac AC.
Are there toxins in these products?
These products can contain all or some of the following:
-aluminum chloride
-aluminum chlorohydrate
-aluminum-zirconium compounds
-aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly
-aluminum zirconium trichlorohydrexgly
While research suggests aluminum is poorly absorbed into the body through the gastrointestinal tract, it also suggests there is a greater burden on the body when aluminum is absorbed through the skin which enters your system and your brain. Research also suggests aluminum is a neurotoxin and may be linked to Alzheimer, other neurological diseases and also breast cancer. Read more about how your health is affected.
Can you make a difference in your health?
There are easy ways to make your own products free from aluminum. You can be in control of what you put on your skin. Read labels, know what ingredients are, research to keep yourself informed. Know what you are putting on your skin which can affect your body.
Here is an easy recipe that has only three ingredients so you're not running all over town looking for them. If you don't already cook with coconut oil, you will want to make this a staple in your home as it has many uses. The baking soda will help absorb the moisture away from the odor causing bacteria. Lavender essential oil is such a versatile oil I use everyday with many benefits.
EASY 3 INGREDIENT LAVENDER DEODORANT WITH DOTERRA LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL:
INGREDIENTS:
DoTERRA Lavender Essential Oil: 5 drops (order here)
1/4 cup cold pressed virgin Coconut Oil - I used Nutiva brand
1/4 cup baking soda
UTENSILS:
spoon
popsicle stick
small mixing bowl
pretty glass jar/container to place finished product in
DIRECTIONS:
Place baking soda and coconut oil in mixing bowl.
Add 5 drops of DoTERRA Lavender Essential Oil.
Mix ingredients with spoon until smooth. If it is hot where you are the mixture will be runny, that's ok.
Pour mixture in pretty container.
It's done and it's that simple !!!
Use the popsicle stick or other utensil to put some in your hand to apply to your skin.
Enjoy the scent of lavender :)
Keep in cool area out of sun so it will set but not be too hard to work with. You should be able to rub this on to apply to your skin under arms. It is ok if it gets hot and is a bit runny. It won't spoil by being left out. Keep an air tight cover on so it doesn't dry out.
Ratio of coconut oil to baking soda is 1:1 - if you want to make a larger batch, increase in 1:1 ratio of both and add a few more drops of DoTERRA Lavender Essential Oil.
Make it a family event and get creative by getting the whole family in on the fun by decorating their own container - see video here.
