When you listen to a horse, I mean really, really listen, the horse can teach you many things about them and yourself. By listen, I mean...... listen with your heart. Not just the beating of your heart, but the connection to your soul with the horse.
You first need to be comfortable around a horse for a horse to be comfortable with you. Horses feel by energy and they smell your hormones in the air to know your emotional well being. A great deal of energy flows within a horse. If you are lucky they will flow some of that energy your way to share with you. Once you open yourself up to your horse and your horse opens up to you, a beautiful relationship is formed. A bond like no other. When you give of yourself openly, honestly and freely, the horse will give back.
Listening
It is a very humbling experience when a horse leans in to snuggle you to look into your eyes to see deep within your soul. This is a huge compliment from a horse. The more time you spend listening to your horse, the more the horse can trust you, the more a horse trusts, the more they relax. When they relax, they let go of stress that builds up in their muscles (and they have a lot of muscles), and when their muscles relax they can feel as light as a feather floating in the soft gentle breeze. Now picture your 2600 pound horse twirling up on one hoof with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. See him walk with head held high and proud. See him easily lay down in the green pastures for a mid afternoon nap and after nap time is done, get back up with ease. Now picture yourself doing that. Do you have a smile on your face and a twinkle in your eye? Did you smell the flowers in the pasture? Doesn't that feel good to be able to move around with ease?
Masterson Beyond Massage
When your horse is relaxed, their energy can focus more intently on what they need to do instead of being distracted by tightening muscles. When you get stressed, you feel tense and your muscles constrict and soon you get pulled into a ball of yourself. Now some stress is known to be good to get you moving and pumped up. But too much stress can wear you down, make you feel tired out and actually make you sick. Horses can get sick from too much stress and muscles being tight which can cause health issues, like muscle tears, digestive problems, lameness, even intermittently. When you feel stressed, take some deep breaths and as you breathe out, let the tension relax until you feel your muscles move more freely. When your horse gets tensed up, you can help him relax by being gentle and calming. There are many ways to do this. Horses have acupressure points like humans, they like massage like humans and they like to move in ways that allow their muscles to feel relaxed.
The Dance
Horses all have unique personalities like humans, some refined and gentle, some not so much, some full of fun. Getting to know your horse can surprise you because they can dance to many different emotions. Horses can get down and feel sad too. They can also let you know when they are feeling playful by borrowing your hat or unzipping your zippers. Always reassure your horse you love them and let them know they are safe with you. Look into their eyes to see the energy that dances within. Approach them by asking, not demanding. Spend one on one time and allow them to release. A happy horse is a happy horse owner. As Buck Brannaman teaches, "Everything you do with a horse is a dance." Both you and your horse should enjoy the dance.
We are all made up of energy. While I massage a horse and they relax, I relax too. The flow of energy grows deep within both me and the horse. The joy of helping an animal relax is truly heartwarming to the depths of your soul. The natural adrenaline rush that flows is addictive to both and will keep you coming back for more. As you do, let the horses speak... to your soul.
